¿Lo que está sucediendo? 

Las muertes por píldoras falsas con fentanilo están aumentando en todos los estados del país. Las muertes por drogas ya no afectan solo a las personas que luchan contra la enfermedad de la adicción. Debido a la introducción del fentanilo en el suministro de drogas ilícitas de nuestra nación, los jóvenes estudiantes, algunos de tan solo 13 años, están muriendo por envenenamientos relacionados con el fentanilo. Los adolescentes sin saberlo piensan que están recibiendo medicamentos recetados familiares, pero en cambio están recibiendo el fentanilo mucho más poderoso y están perdiendo la vida: adolescentes que tenían esperanzas, sueños y planes, y que merecían tener una vida larga y plena.

Los adolescentes compran lo que creen que son píldoras OxyContin, Percocet o Xanax a través de las redes sociales, pero los traficantes de drogas están fabricando estas píldoras falsas con la droga sintética más barata, fuerte y letal llamada fentanilo para aumentar sus ganancias. El fentanilo es hasta 50 veces más potente que la heroína y 100 veces más potente que la morfina. El fentanilo es inodoro, insípido e incoloro. Los adolescentes nunca saben lo que están recibiendo. Las píldoras reciben el sobrenombre de "Blues" por su color común (aunque pueden venir en otros colores) o "M30s" por el sello en las píldoras. Las tabletas están tan bien hechas que incluso los usuarios experimentados dicen que no pueden distinguir la diferencia entre una píldora falsificada y una píldora fabricada por una compañía farmacéutica.

Para ser claros, estos no son analgésicos de grado farmacéutico; son pastillas hechas por traficantes de drogas, en su mayoría fuera del país. No hay control de calidad. Las píldoras en el mismo lote pueden tener niveles de fentanilo que varían enormemente. La cantidad de fentanilo que se necesita para una sobredosis y morir es equivalente a dos granos de arena.

 

En septiembre de 2021, la DEA emitió su primera alerta de seguridad en seis años para advertir a los estadounidenses sobre “el aumento alarmante en la letalidad y disponibilidad de píldoras recetadas falsas que contienen fentanilo y metanfetamina”. La DEA señala anuncios en plataformas de redes sociales como Snapchat, Tiktok e Instagram. Las autoridades dicen que los jóvenes encuentran las pastillas especialmente atractivas porque son baratas, más aceptables socialmente que la metanfetamina o la heroína y no tienen un olor revelador como el alcohol o la marihuana.

 

Las muertes de jóvenes por píldoras falsas no son un problema que puedan solucionar los padres o las escuelas por sí solos; es un problema que las comunidades deben abordar juntas: padres, estudiantes, empresas de redes sociales, fuerzas del orden público, profesionales de la salud, escuelas y más, todos necesitan crear un entorno seguro y saludable para sus hijos.     A little time planning can go a long way and give you much more success than just forwarding a mail or a link. Think through these topics and be sure to do your research.
  • Educate yourself
    Make sure you have a good understanding of what is happening with the drug landscape in America with the introduction of fentanyl so you are able to competently and confidently speak to the issues. Some good resources: The Fentapill Problem: A Summary Parent Resources
  • Personal Story
    Are you a bereaved parent yourself or have a close friend or family member who is? Personal stories have huge impact. Think about if and how you want to tell that story as part of this effort in a way that makes the impact you are looking for and respects your child and family. Decide what aspects of your story you are not willing to share or are not important to the main message.
  • Local News
    Locate one or more relatively recent news stories from your own community or those nearby (google ‘fentanyl’ and your city or state). The more current and specific the story is about age, Fentapills, social media, etc., the better. Save these web links.
  • Data
    Find key data points and information about fentanyl/fentapills from reputable places that support the idea that this is needed in your community. If you can access local data and information through your local health department or law enforcement, that is ideal. Also be on the lookout for specific data points in local news articles.   • Existing curriculum
    If your school district publishes their learning standards and/or curriculum, find out what is already included on this topic. If you have a teacher contact that teaches health curriculum, they can help you find this. It can be helpful if you know the specific learning standard/target you are trying to influence (i.e.: “Educate students on the social and health impacts of misuse of controlled substances”). If you can get your hands on classroom content, it is helpful to know if it specifically covers fake pills that can easily bought on social media so you know if there is a gap in the existing curriculum being taught in your schools.

FREE middle and high school learning material is available through either link below. The Classroom Lesson Materials come from several different sources. The Fake & Fatal material was developed by teachers in the Beaverton School District (Oregon) using best known practices. The lessons were developed to be turn-key and can be used as is in conjunction with the current drug curriculum your district uses, or they can be modified to fit your needs.
